Race Couture

The glaring absence of positive black female role models in media and advertising inspired the "Race Couture" series. As I looked through a particular shopping catalog that my sister received monthly, I noticed that even though she and other minority women shopped at the clothing destination, the catalogues had not one minority model on its pages.

"Race Couture" also addresses issues of colonial mentality and self loathing that cause dark-skinned women to resort to drastic skin lightening techniques.

The red stream and puddle represent universal womanhood and how women are able to connect beyond boundaries, and in spite of coporate definitions of femininity.
